In this course students will learn about a variety of advanced topics in algebra. Students will expand their understanding about functions by learning about polynomial, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. These new functions along with linear, quadratic, and exponential, will be used to model a variety of problems, including compound interest, complex numbers, growth and decay, projectile motion, and periodic phenomena.

Polynomial and rational algebra is extensively covered including advanced factoring and polynomial long division. Advanced work in probability is included that focusses on the use of conditional probability. Increased fluency with quadratic equations and functions provides a strong base for studying polynomials, rational functions, and trigonometric identities. In this unit, students will also be introduced to a new type of number system, the imaginary numbers, and will identify and operate with imaginary solutions.

Graphing calculators are introduced heavily in this unit and will be used for the remainder of the year. Students build on their knowledge of the features, forms, and representations of quadratic functions, and extend their understanding from solutions in the real number system to the complex number system.

Students analyze features of polynomials using their equations and graphs, perform arithmetic operations on polynomials, and use polynomial identities to solve problems. Students will extend their understanding of inverse functions to functions with a degree higher than 1, and factor and simplify rational expressions to reveal domain restrictions and asymptotes. Students revisit exponential functions, including geometric sequences and series, and learn to manipulate logarithmic expressions and equations to solve problems involving exponential modeling.

Students discover trigonometry, which allows them to synthesize knowledge of transformations and properties of other functions while offering a new perspective on functions through periodicity. Students expand on their knowledge of trigonometry, developing a foundation for calculus concepts by expanding their conception of trigonometric functions and looking at connections between functions. Students use probability to make better decisions based on knowledge than on intuition alone, and use the normal distribution to understand outcomes of random processes repeated over time.

Students are introduced to calculus topics of limits, continuity, and derivatives, and gain a foundation of essential calculus skills.
