MRTG is a great program. Its data are automatically reduced over time to larger intervals to keep log files from growing without bound. This means that the 10 minute average numbers get reduced to 30 minute averages and then 2 hour averages after a while in the log file.
In an MRTG data file, the first values are at the run interval 10 minutes at the Coopthe next are reduced to 30 minute intervals, the next are reduced to 2 hour intervals, and the rest are reduced to 24 hour intervals. Can you please give an example for second point under why we need 90th percentile. Let's consider the response time data set is: 2,3,3,32,4,3,1,4,1,2 where a major spike had been seen at 4th interval and then system recovered.
If you calculate the average of data set then you will find it is 5. Please note that I would recommend to investigate the root cause of very high spikes, because you can not ignore them all time.
